The Tour’s biggest climbs by the numbers

The Tour de France peloton takes on 28 major climbs in 2016. Here's a look at the key stats for each of these pivotal mountains.

Chris Froome was quick to remark that this year’s race is a “climber’s Tour.” On the other side of the spectrum, sprinter Mark Cavendish was similarly impressed by the mountainous route: “In 2008 there were 18 category 2 and above climbs in the Tour de France; last year there were 18 in the last week alone and this year there are 28!”

So here’s a look at the biggest, toughest, and likely most decisive climbs of the 2016 Tour de France:

Stage 5 (Le Lioran)
Pas de Peyrol (1,589m): 5.4km at 8.1%, category 2
Col du Perthus (1,309m): 4.4km at 7.9%, category 2

Stage 7 (Lac de Payolle)
Col d’Aspin (1,490m): 12km at 6.5%, category 1

Stage 8 (Bagnères-de-Luchon)
Col du Tourmalet (2,115m): 19km at 7.4%, hors catégorie
