The Quick Step team has named Italian Francesco Reda to replace the injured Tom Boonen on the team’s Tour de France roster.
Boonen announced last week that he would be unable to start the Tour after aggravating a knee injury at the Tour of Switzerland.
Reda, who broke his collarbone at Tirreno-Adriatico in March, has never ridden the Tour before, but has competed in two editions of the Giro d’Italia.
Quick Step manager Patrick Lefevere said the team had hoped to replace Boonen with Wouter Weylandt as the team’s sprinter, but Weylandt’s name was not part of the team’s 15-member roster submitted to ASO in April.
