Michael Matthews will not start Tour

Training crash results in an injury to his left hand, requiring six stitches

One day prior to the start of the Tour de France, Orica-GreenEdge announced that Michael Matthews will not line up for the Grand Départ, having crashed while training earlier this week.

The 23-year-old Australian showed promise at the Giro d’Italia this year, wearing the pink jersey for six days and winning stage 6. However, his crash resulted in an injury to his left hand, which required six stitches.

Via Twitter, Matthews said, “Well that’s my Tour de France dream done. All the hard work gone. Dream shattered.”

In his place, 29-year-old Canadian Christian Meier will take the start Saturday in Leeds, England.
