AMIENS, France (AFP) — New Zealand’s Jack Bauer abandoned the Tour de France around 100km into Wednesday’s stage 5.
The 30-year-old 2010 national champion was caught up in a crash earlier in the day on the 189.5km run from Arras to Amiens.
Cannondale-Garmin’s Bauer also hit the tarmac on the chaotic stage 3 on Monday in which seven riders were forced out of the race after a pile-up involving around 20 people.
Bauer was the second rider to abandon on Wednesday, and ninth overall, after French sprinter Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis).
