Alberto Contador will take aim at the Spanish national title this weekend in both the road race and time trial events.
The race will be Contador’s first competition since winning the Giro d’Italia and his final tune-up ahead of the 2011 Tour de France, which starts July 2 in western France. Contador will compete in Friday’s time trial and Sunday’s road race events in a bid to take the Spanish national jersey into the Tour.
“Everybody likes to run these races and try to win, plus it comes particularly well to prepare for the Tour after not having raced since the Giro”, Contador said in a press release Thursday. “This will allow me to get rhythm of competition and in the time trial, making a test quite like the last TT of the Tour, which is very similar to this one”.
Contador said the Spanish championships will be an important transition into the Tour de France, where he will line up next weekend as the five-star favorite, but also dogged by the controversy of his unresolved clenbuterol case. Contador said he’s still feeling the effects of the Giro, which he won with domination in all aspects of the race.
“As time passes, I feel more rested, but it remains to be seen, because all I did was rest. I am not sure how I will respond,” he said. “(After the Giro), I will not have the same freshness, not only physically, but also mentally.”
Contador also said he’s satisfied with the selection of the Tour de France team, which he called balanced and deep.
“I am very happy with the Tour team. It’s very balanced, with four riders for the flats and four for the mountains who can support me,” he said. “Everyone is very motivated and will their 100 percent.”
