Teutenberg takes Wachovia

While the Keystone State already has a town with the name, Philadelphia might want to start thinking of borrowing the moniker “Germantown” for a few hours every year. Ina Yoko Teutenberg (T-Mobile) became the eighth German winner in the 11 editions of the Wachovia Liberty Classic, out-kicking a select break at the end of the 57.6-mile race. For Teutenberg, her first Philly win was déjà vu all over again

The gigantic women’s field was scheduled for four laps of the 14.4-mile lap, but less than half-way through the opening tour a careless cross of wheels sent riders scattering and created the first of several scenes of havoc on a nervous first lap. But as riders picked themselves off the pavement, the pace picked up as well.

By lap two a dangerous break, headed by an on-form Oenone Wood (Equipe Nünerberger) scampered away and grabbed nearly a minute. With major teams missing out on the break it was only a matter of time before either more riders bridged up or the pack re-grouped. The former proved the case and nearly 20 riders, with many of the pre-race favorites included, charged up the Manayunk Wall climb with almost a minute in hand.

The gap from to the break never got more than a minute, but a concerted chase from the dwindling peloton failed to materialize. Christine Thorburn (Webcor) tried to burn off some of the break’s sprinters the final trip up Manayunk, but only deadwood came off the back and all the sprinters survived. Coming into the final couple miles, world champion Judith Arndt (Equipe Nünerberger) made her bid for a solo win, knowing she had two teammates in the break to better the team’s chances for a win. Arndt’s moves went nowhere and a 15-rider caravan rolled into the final kilometer with a sprint in the works.

Jumping on the wheel of Laura Van Gilder (Quark), the season’s best sprinter so far, Teutenberg waited until the final 150 meters to put her nose into the wind and the resulting head of steam was too much for Van Gilder and Regina Schleicher (Equipe Nünerberger), who took third and second, respectively.”

It was T-Mobile biggest win of the year, and in recent memory, and the German sprinter admitted to strange feelings of familiarity, even though it was her first win in Philly.

“I was with Petra [Rossner] when she won five of her seven wins here,” said Teutenberg. “So, I feel like I have won this race before. When your team wins you feel like you win, but crossing the line first is nice as well. It’s a great win for our team.”

Rossner, who watched the race from the driver’s seat of the Equipe Nünerberger car, admitted that if one of her riders couldn’t win, having Teutenberg get the victory was nearly as satisfying.

“Ina helped me win a lot of races,” said Rossner, “seeing her win this, she deserved it so I’m happy for her.”
