5:10[local time] Ullrich has finished in second place — a likely third — at 1:15:55.

5:06[local time] Joseba Beloki has finished with a strong 1:16:48, good enough for fifth, but more importantly, he has locked in third place overall.

At the third time check, Armstrong has crossed with a 1:07:27 – 1:14 better than Gonzales and 1:36 up on Ullrich.

4:58[local time] Igor González de Galdeano has set a new top finishing time at 1:15:40. Bobby Julich has slipped to fourth.

4:52[local time] Armstrong has crossed through the second time check at 53:40 — a full minute better than the previous best time set by Igor González de Galdeano and already 1:23 faster than Jan Ullrich.

Ahead Joseba Beloki appears set to take over the third spot in the overall standings, besting current third-placed Andre Kivilev by more than two minutes. He was only 1:20 behind the Cofidis rider at the start of the day.

4:49[local time]Marcos Serrano has finished in 1:16:41 — four hundredths of a second off of Rous’s time. Julich has now slipped to third.

4:45[local time] ONCE’s Joseba Beloki has caught and passed his three-minute man, Francois Simon.

4:43[local time] Didier Rous has turned in a 1:16:41 – topping the time of Bobby Julich (1:16:53) and is now atop the leader board.

4:39[local time]Igor González de Galdeano (ONCE) has set a new top mark –54:41– at the second time check.

4:34[local time] Telekom’s Alexander Vinokourov has finished with a 1:17:13. That’s good enough for second, 20 seconds behind Julich.

4:28[local time] 126 riders have finished the time trial and Bobby Julich continues atop the leader board with his 1:16:53.

But the men behind him are setting faster marks at the check points.

4:25[local time] At the first time check, Lance Armstrong has passed through with 25:01 – the best time of the day — 25 seconds better than the previous best set by ONCE’s Igor González de Galdeano.

Ullrich was another nine seconds behind that mark.

4:15[local time] Bobby Julich has finished with the day’s best time of 1:16:53.

That Merckx time at checkpoint 3 appears to have been an error.

4:12[local time] Now there is a familiar name — some fella named Merckx has just sett the best time at the third time check at 55km.

4:07[local time] Guitierrez has finished with the new best time – 1:17:17.

4:03[local time] Gutierrez has just set the top mark at the 55km time check. His 1:10:11 is 27 deconds better than previous mark set by Kloden.

But Kloden has just set the new best time at the finish at 1:17:33.

4:01[local time] At 55km, Kloden has set the new top mark at 1:10:38.

4:00[local time] Lance Armstrong — the final starter today — is on his way.

3:57 [local time]Bobby Julich has set the best time at the second time check at 55:36. But behind him, Didier Rous (Bonjour) has just set the best time at the first time check.

Ullrich has just started.

3:52 [local time] Cofidis’s Andre’ Kivilev has left the starting house. Next up is Jan Ullrich and then Lance Amrmstrong.

These last starters are being sent of at 3-minute intervals.

3:46 [local time] Guitierrez has beat Kloden’s time by 53 seconds at the second time check. Julich is close to reaching that mark.

3:43 [local time] Telekom’s Andreas Kloden has set the new top mark at the 43km time check. His mark is 39 seconds faster than the previous best set by ONCE’s Alvaro González de Galdeano.

3:31 [local time] Heyyyyy, this is cool. American Bobby Julich has just passed through the first time check and established a new top mark. His 26:12 is seven seconds better than that just set by Kelme’s José Enrique Guitierrez.

3:26 [local time]Kelme’s José Enrique Guitierez has set a new top mark at the 1st time check. His 26:19 is 37 seconds better than the previous top mark.

3:17 [local time] O’Grady has finished with a 1:23:02 — 4:17 off of the mark set by the man who continues to lead the stage, Lampre’s Rubens Bertogliati, who was the day’s first finisher and set the standard at 1:18:44.

Of course, the biggies will be starting soon. It is just 40 minutes from the time Lance Armstrong leaves the starting gate.

3:09 [local time] O’Grady has passed the third time check. His 1:11:50 is 3:27 behind the mark set by Alvaro González de Galdeano (ONCE).

3:03 [local time] O’Grady is now 9km from the finish.

Interestingly, Robin has used the Aussie as motivation, keeping pace with O’Grady since he was caught. No, not drafting but riding along side or far enough back to be legal. He’s 2:00 minutes down, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be losing much more time to the man in the green jersey.

2:55[local time] O’Grady has passed through the second time check at km 43, turning in a 59:17 – the day’s sixth best so far, and 1:57 behind the top mark set by Alvaro González de Galdeano (ONCE).

2:47[local time] O’Grady — with Robin not too far back — is negotiating the narrow forested roads on the way to the second time check.

VeloNews’s Bryan Jew says the crowds are quite large all along the course.

2:41[local time] O’Grady has 25km to go. He looks to be on pace for a respectable ride, but not one that will put him in a position to earn any additional sprint points — awarded to the top 10 finishers.

The green jersey battle between the Credit Agricole rider and Telekom’s Erik Zabel will continue all the way to Paris.

2:32[local time] O’Grady has caught Robin on the short 1-kilometer climb at km 23.

2:21[local time] O’Grady has passed through the first time check at km 21.5, tuurning in a 27:56 – one minute off of the pace set much earlier by ONCE’s González de Galdeano.

Click here to see preliminary finishing results and starting times for Stage 18 TT.2:15[local time] John Wilcockson is following Stuart O’Grady in the VeloNews car.

O’Grady is going on at a clip clip — “a steady 50kph,” and closing in on his two-minute man Jean-Cyril Robin (Bonjour).

Right now he is at km17.

2:00[local time]Bertogliati continues to sit atop the leader board. He was the first rider to finish today, having caught the only man who started ahead of him, La Francaise des Jeux’s Jimmy Casper.

U.S. Postal’s Tyler Hamilton has posted a time of 1:22:09 — currently placing him in 11th place at 3:24.

1:42 [local time]He faded in that last stretch. González de Galdeano has turned in a 1:18:54 – nine seconds off the mark set early today by Bertogliati.

The temperatures are quite warm today — in the upper 80s. It’s the humidity that is making the day feel oppressive, however. At the start area VeloNews’s Lennard Zinn reports that the humidity is up around 95 percent.

1:35 [local time] González de Galdeano has set the new top mark at the 51km mark. His 1:11:50 is just 5 seconds better than the Swiss rider Bertogliati.

News from the start area is that aero’ guru John Cobb has arrived from the U.S. to work with the Postal team. He will be following Roberto Heras with a video camera to see where the Spanish rider can improve his TT form. Advice from the master.

1:21 [local time] Ekimov came through the first time check at a very moderate pace. The Olympic TT champion was 2:40 behind the mark set by González de Galdeano, so he’s probably content just riding this one out.

1:21 [local time]González de Galdeano’s time at the 43km mark was 57:20 good enough to put him at the top of that intermediate time check, too. We might see a new stage leader when arrives at the finish line.

1:15 [local time] We should be seeing two intermediate times of note coming up soon. González de Galdeano’s time at the 43km mark and the arrival of Postal rider Viatcheslev Ekimov at the first time check.

12:59 [local time] ONCE’s Alvaro González de Galdeano has set the new speed mark (26:56) at the first time check at km 21.5, besting the mark set earlier today by Lampre’s Bertogliati – the current top man on the leader board.

12:45 [local time] Eighteen riders have finished thus far today. So far, the top time has been turned in by Rubens Bertogliati (Lampre-Daikin). He covered the 60.5km in 1:18:44.

12:30 [local time] Good afternoon from the Boulevard de Courtais in Montluçon.

Thus far, about 30 riders of the 145 remaining in the 2001 Tour de France are on the road either on their way to or already in St. Amand Montrand, the finish of today’s 60.5km individual time trial.

As always, the starting order is based on the reverse of the General Classification, with this Tour’s Latern Rouge Jimmy Casper starting this morning at 10:53 and Mr. Armstrong scheduled to start at 4:00 this afternoon.

NoticeThe 18th Stage of the 2001 Tour de France features a 60.5km individual time trial from Montlucon to St. Aman Montrond. Beginning from the bottom of the General Classifications list, the first rider begins at 10:45 a.m. local time. Most riders start at 2:00 intervals with the final 20 riders starting at three-minute intervals.

We’ll pick up the action — complete with leaders’ positions at various time checks — beginning at 6:30 EDT (U.S. time) on Friday morning.
