Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) erased any doubts of his form with a dramatic victory in Tuesday’s summit finish at Corno Alle Scale and slipped on his favorite color in May.

The two-time Giro d’Italia champion was uncharacteristically quiet in the spring, letting teammate Damiano Cunego take the spotlight while he calmly prepared with the idea of arriving to July’s Tour de France with fresher legs than last year’s disappointing meltdown.

But first comes the Giro, and Simoni made a clear demonstration Tuesday that he’s the man to beat, gapping pre-race favorites Yaroslav Popovych (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola) with a vicious acceleration just under 3km to go to the snow-covered summit.

Simoni takes the jersey and already holds a 1:05 lead to last year’s runner-up Garzelli just four days into the three-week race across Italy.

“The Giro isn’t over yet because it hasn’t really started,” said Simoni after taking his first victory of the 2004 season. “I won the stage but it’s only the first mountain finish of the race. As I’ve said before, the Giro will be decided in the final week when we have four consecutive mountain stages.”

Saeco deployed a deadly one-two punch that left their rivals gasping for air. Saeco sent Monday’s stage-winner Damiano Cunego on the attack with just over 3km to go and the acceleration cost overnight race leader Brad McGee (FDJeux.com) his hold on the maglia rosa.

Cunego opened a small gap but it wasn’t long before Simoni easily bridged out, leaving Popovych, Garzelli, Giuliano Figueras (Panaria), Franco Pellizotti (Alessio-Bianchi) struggling in their wake.

And it wasn’t long after that the 32-year-old Simoni punched the accelerator again, slipping further away from a chasing quartet of challengers who had nothing in the tank to match the aggressive move.

“Today everybody had to put their cards on the table and I showed I’m going well,” Simoni said. “We played two cards: me and Cunego. He attacked with 3km to go but when I saw Popovych go after him I decided to go as well. Cunego was struggling and I felt good so I carried on alone. I suffered a lot but managed to carve out a gap.”

Cunego waited for the chasers to come up and came through to finish second at 15 seconds back. Add up the time bonuses and the 22-year-old Cunego sits second overall at just 13 seconds back, presenting himself as a legitimate shot at the podium.

“Damiano has a great future ahead of him in the next few years,” Simoni continued. “He’s going to stay at Saeco for another two years and I hope I can stay as well and one day teach him how to win a Giro.”

The early part of the stage was lit up by the lone escape of Italy’s Renzo Mazzoleni (Tenax), who at one point built up a 16-minute lead but was eventually reeled in and caught at the bottom of the final climb.

Saeco demonstrated it was ready to assume responsibility of the race, putting the team at the front of the bunch to reel in Mazzoleni near the base of the 12km final climb.

With Tuesday’s dominant performance, Saeco takes over the team’s classification with Simoni in both the leader’s jersey and the KOM jersey. Cunego holds the Azzurri d’Italia classification as well as the most combatitve and points jerseys.

The group was trimmed to about 30 riders when the fireworks started to fly with Saeco demonstration on the Corno Alle Scale, where Italian skiing superstar Alberto Tomba learned to ski. Popovych and Garzelli both struggled to match the pace, but recovered late to minimize the damage.

Popovych, the tough Ukraine who finished third last year, came through fifth at 16 second back and sits third overall at 21 seconds back while Garzelli lost more ground, coming through 8th at 34 seconds back. With the time bonuses, the 2000 champion is 1:05 back.

With so much of the Giro still ahead, Simoni said it’s unlikely the team will fight to keep the jersey all the way to Milan, where the Giro ends May 30. Instead, the team will keep a watchful eye on breaks to conserve their strength for the decisive final week.

“The pink jersey has always given me lots of energy and so perhaps it’s better to have it than suffer trying to get it. I feel incredibly fresh because I haven’t raced very much this year,” he said. “We’ll see what happens in the next few days but as I’ve said in the past, it’s important to have the pink jersey at the end of the race. That’s what counts.”

The 87th Giro d’Italia continues Wednesday with the rolling184km fourth stage from Porretta Terme to Civitella In Val Di Chiana, presenting the sprinters a chance to strut their stuff after a hard day in the mountains.
