AL BUSTAN, Oman (VN) — Peter Sagan (Cannondale) won stage 2 of the Tour of Oman in Al Bustan on Tuesday.

Tony Gallopin (RadioShack-Leopard) was second and Martin Elmiger (IAM Cycling) was third.

With the solo win, Sagan assumed the overall lead after the second of six stages. It is his first win of 2013 and the first victory for his team this season.

Overnight leader Marcel Kittel (Argos-Shimano) lost contact with the peloton late in the stage and ceded the red leader’s jersey to the young Slovak.

The 23-year-old Cannondale rider broke free from the pack in the final kilometer to finish nine seconds in front of Gallopin, with Elmiger a further two seconds back. Sagan, the Slovakian champion, also won stage 2 of last year’s race and counts three stages wins to his name in the Tour de France and Vuelta a España.

The six-stage race continues Wednesday with the 190km third stage between Nakhal Fort and Wadi Dayqah Dam, which features a profile that will again suit the likes of attacking riders like Sagan.
