Saturn’s Petra Rossner is on a streak. Fresh off of her sixth win at Philadelphia’s Liberty Classic, the German national champion took the opening took the opening stage of the H.P. Women’s Challenge Saturday, winning the field sprint into Idaho City by more than five bike-lengths.

The 69.5-mile first stage, which last year shattered the field with strong winds, offered very little in action today. With temperatures soaring into the mid-90s, and very little wind to influence the deep field of talented riders, today’s peloton was content to ride together.

The only true climb of the day, a steady 6.5-mile rise that delivers nearly 1000 feet of elevation gain 40 miles into the race, briefly shed about 20 riders — including Rossner — but the riders quickly regrouped. Rona’s Genevieve Jeanson took the mountain sprint, and will wear the green jersey of mountain leader tomorrow.

After the descent, the course wound through valleys and over creek crossings, taking a very gentle rise into the old western town of Idaho City. The Lithuanian National team made subtle attempts to create a break, with former world champion Diana Ziliute and current world champion Rasa Polikeviciute pushing the pace, however the pack was reluctant to let anyone get away.

“We just wanted to see how the others were feeling,” Ziliute said with a smile afterwards.

With 5 km to go, Saturn’s Catherine Marsal gave it a go, and opened a gap of nearly 10 seconds over the field. For a long breath it appeared she might be able to pull it off, but the pace behind her was too much, and she was caught with less than 500 meters left, setting up the surging pack for a field sprint.

Rossner, the winner of last weekend’s First Union Liberty Classic, jumped behind teammate Anna Milward’s wheel, and simply had more kick at the end, out sprinting Ziliute and the rest by a large margin.

Tomorrow’s stage of 99 kilometers brings the athletes over Banner Pass from Lowman to Stanley.

Race Notes:

Last year’s overall winner, Lyne Bessette (Canadian National) finished comfortably in the pack, in 21st place.

Saturday’s stage was over nine minutes slower than last year’s– a course record, set by then 42-year-old French champion Jeannie Longo (with Bessette on her wheel for the last 35 km)– at 2:40:25.
