Rollin, Pic score in Walterboro Cycling Classic

Ramping up to speeds of nearly 37 mph, Dominique Rollin (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) roared out of the darkened streets of Walterboro, South Carolina, Wednesday night to take his second win on this year's USA Crits Southeast series. Rollin, who beat Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing) by just a half a wheel in the Walterboro Cycling Classic, said the layout of the fourth leg of the series prompted the fast pace. "Since it's a long drag on both sides, it just allows us to reach speeds of 30, 31 miles per hour. And I think the heat just helped us to keep that speed,” he said.

Ramping up to speeds of nearly 37 mph, Dominique Rollin (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) roared out of the darkened streets of Walterboro, South Carolina, Wednesday night to take his second win on this year’s USA Crits Southeast series.

Rollin, who beat Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing) by just a half a wheel in the Walterboro Cycling Classic, said the layout of the fourth leg of the series prompted the fast pace.

“Since it’s a long drag on both sides, it just allows us to reach speeds of 30, 31 miles per hour. And I think the heat just helped us to keep that speed,” he said.

Temperatures approached 90 degrees during the day, as the aroma of low-country boil drifted over the start/finish line. And while the weather cooled slightly over the course of the event, multiple attacks from the likes of Adam Bergman (Colavita Olive Oil-Sutter Home), and Curtis Gunn (SuccessfulLiving.com) kept the racing hot.

None of the breakaway attempts proved sustainable, however, and the race became something of a prime hunt until the end, when the men of Kodak Gallery staked their claim at the front of the pack. The tempo of the women’s race virtually mirrored that of the men; breaks went, but nothing stuck. Mandy Lozano (TargetTraining) turned the evening’s fastest lap time (2:05) until Tina Pic responded to the last-minute effort of a very dominant Team Cheerwine and crossed the line in first place a full seven seconds faster.

Pic said course design and fatigue helped keep the breaks under wraps.

“I think people were actually getting a little tired,” she said. “People would kind of try to get away, but it was wide enough on the backside that you could still see them and there were not enough corners back to back so people would just get sucked back in.”

With her win Pic collected another $1000 for the City of Hope charity, which benefits breast cancer research.

Racing continues Thursday with the Uptown Greenwood Pro Cycling Challenge in Greenword, South Carolina.
