Rising star Cunego grabs Giro stage at Pontremoli

The Saeco team knew it had a real talent on its hands this spring when Damiano Cunego scored a string of wins – five over the course of just 10 days – leading up to the Giro d’Italia. Last Friday, just before the start of Italy’s national tour, the team added another two years to the young rider’s contract and just in time, too. The 22-year-old from Verona scored on Monday what will surely be the first of a string of grand tour stage wins in coming years, as he edged Brad McGee in a sprint into Pontremoli.

The day’s 184-kilometer stage began in Novi Liguri, not far from Castellania, the birthplace of national cycling legend Fausto Coppi. The stage quickly took on a character different from the meandering start that marked Sunday’s stage from Genoa to Alba. Teams sent off a series attacks over the opening hour until a large group of 23 escaped at the 36km mark.

Those riders — Dean Podgornik (Tenax) led a break of 23 riders which included Paolo Fornaciari and Gorazd Stangelj (Saeco), Ruggero Marzoli and Bo Hamburger (Acqua & Sapone), Alessandro Bertolini and Marcus Ljungqvist (Alessio – Bianchi), Fortunato Baliani and Alejandro Borrajo (Ceramiche Panaria), Ruber Marin (Colombia – Selle Italia), Alessandro Vanoti (De Nardi), Luis Laverde (Formaggi Pinzolo-Fiave), Robert Förster, Marcel Strauss and Thomas Ziegler (Gerolsteiner), Jan Svorada (Lampre), Nico Symens and Sergey Avdyeyev (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Gert Steegmans (Lotto – Domo), Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval – Prodir), Giancarlo Ginestri (Tenax), and Gianluca Sironi and Steve Zampieri (Vini Caldirola) — eventually built up a four-minute lead as they approached the day’s first major climb, the Category 3 Passo del Bocco.

As the leaders neared the start of the climb, Bertolini tried his luck with a solo escape, succeeding only in shedding the likes of Podgornik, Svorada and Ginestri over the course of the 15.4km climb. By the summit the attackers had extended their advantage on the main field to nearly five minutes.

It was then that teams without representatives in the break – FDJeux and Phonak chief among them – began a serious chase, driven by a fear that, unchallenged, the group ahead may include a GC threat from the likes of Stangelj, Förster or Zampieri. Indeed, with three riders in the break, the team of race leader Olaf Pollack could simply sit back and enjoy the ride, leaving much of the work to the more nervous teams in the peloton.

Descending Passo del Bocco, a lead group of 16 riders regrouped at the front of the course: Fornaciari, Stangelj, Marzoli, Hamburger, Bertolini, Baliani, Borrajo, Maron, Vanotti, Laverde, Strauss, Sijmens, Bertogliati, Sironi, Zampieri and Avdeyeyev. By the 127k mark, they had an advantage of 2:08 over Svorada and Ginestri, and 4:05 over the peloton.

By the Intergiro line in Bedonia (137.3km), the peloton, having recaptured Svorada and Ginestri, was just 2:08 back. Fifteen kilometers later, the chase had all but neutralized the escapees’ efforts as they reached the lower slopes of the day’s biggest obstacle, the Cat. 2 Passo del Brattello.

Stangelj, the Saeco man from Slovenia, launched a final attack out of the lead group, shattering the remnants of the break, as his teammates moved to the front of the peloton and set a strong enough pace to break apart the main field. Team leader and defending Giro champion Gilberto Simoni sat about four riders back and appeared ready to launch his own attack as the climb neared its steepest portion, reaching almost 10 percent near the summit.

But Simoni’s biggest challenger – 2000 Giro winner Stefano Garzelli (Sidermec Vini Caldirola) – stayed with the leaders as the peloton was reduced to a single-file string of 30 or so riders. Stangelj, was eventually caught just a kilometer from the summit, and he quickly settled into a new role, switching from attacker to domestique as he and five his teammates led the charge over the top of the climb and down the twisting 20km descent into Pontremoli.

Chasing hard down the twisting descent was a small group containing world champion Igor Astarloa (Lampre) and, a further minute back, the main peloton including such notables as race leader Pollack and Fassa Bortolo’s sprint ace Alessandro Petacchi.

With 7km to go, the Astarloa group had narrowed the gap to 15 seconds, as the bulk of the work in the lead group fell to the six Saeco men at the front. Astarloa and his companions finally caught back with just 4km remaining.

Charging into Pontremoli, the lead group – now some 43 riders – had one final climb up the last kilometer to reach the finish. McGee, intent not only on regaining his leader’s jersey, but also grabbing another stage win, launched an attack with nearly 400 meters remaining – something suited to the track pursuiter’s talents. But McGee’s move did not go unchallenged and Cunego edged past him in the closing meters of the stage.

“I only just did it,” gasped Cunego, the 1999 world junior road champion, who is competing in his second Giro. “I could have lost in the last few meters as McGee was very, very close.”

The win reignited earlier speculation about a potential for rivalry between Cunego and his team leader. The young man from Verona, however, dispelled speculation and noted that he was riding this Giro “to support and do all that I can for Simoni and for the team.”

“I’m riding well and I’ll try and win again at Corno alle Scale. However this doesn’t change anything in the Saeco team,” he said. “We’re all here to help Gilberto Simoni win the Giro. I’m still trying to understand how I won the stage. I’ve got time on my side and will have the chance to ride the Giro d’Italia at least another ten times. I can’t be compared to Simoni because I’m not used to handling all the responsibility, I haven’t got his experience. For now I’m happy to ride with him and learn as much as I can. He’s the Team Saeco captain and I’m not saying that to have an easy time, I’m saying it because it’s true.”

McGee, who now leads Landbouwkrediet’s Yaroslav Popovych by 32 seconds, noted that he and his team knew the stage was well-suited to his strengths so he had set out to pull back the leader’s jersey.

“If someone wants to take it away,” he warned, “they’ll have a hard fight.”

That fight may well come on Tuesday when the Giro hits a tough 191km stage from Pontremoli that ends with a mountain-top finish at Corno Alle Scale.
