Geert Steegmans (Quick Step) took a much-needed confidence-boosting victory Wednesday at the Nokere-Koerse semi-classic in Belgium.
The veteran Belgian sprinter ended a winless drought dating back to the 2009 Ruta del Sol with an impressive win in the 195km one-day race across some cobbles in Flanders.
Steegmans finished off the sprint alone, taking advantage of the work by Veranda’s Willems to try to set up Stefan Van Dijk. Steegmans opened up a long sprint and relegated Van Dijk into second, with 2009 winner Graeme Brown (Rabobank) crossing the line third.
“The team worked really well. In the last 400 meters everything just clicked; it wasn’t a chaotic sprint, but quite orderly, just like I like it, with ideal conditions for me to progressively unload my power on the pedals,” Steemans said. “I feel in great shape and I hope to continue like this for the next steps of the season. I hope this victory can bring good luck to me in the next races and to my teammates who’ll be busy on Saturday in the Milano-Sanremo.”
