What’s the difference between a fall and a crash?

Ask Alessandro Petacchi and Mario Cipollini.

The former suffered a fall midway through the rainy 184km fourth stage of the 87th Giro d’Italia, but rebounded to win his second stage in four days.

The latter crashed 200 meters from the line, landing hard on his left side before getting hit by another rider in the hard-charging bunch. Cipollini finished the stage – 150th at 1:35 back — and didn’t suffer any broken bones, but the cycling world will have to wait until Thursday to see if Cipollini’s spirit was crushed in the horrific high-speed crash.

Coming in for the frenetic charge to the line, Domina Vacanze’s Aug and Giovanni Lombardi were looking back to see where their captain was. The 37-year-old was right on Petacchi’s wheel coming in, but seemed to ease up with about 400 meters to go. When Aug pulled off his final launch, he clipped wheels with Cipollini and the proud Tuscan was sent to the ground.

“Suddenly (Andrus) Aug was in front of me, we touched wheels and I ended up on the pavement,” said the Lion King, who’s yet to add to his record haul of 42 stage wins. “Will I remain in the Giro? Who knows? There might be something broken in my ankle.”

The duel between Petacchi and Cipollini is one of the top storylines of the 2004 Giro, but the story might get put to bed earlier than anyone expected. Race leader Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) safely negotiated the melee to retain the maglia rosa, but Super Mario might be headed for an early exit.

While X-rays revealed no broken bones, doctors cautioned Cipollini won’t be able to make a decision on whether he’ll start Thursday’s fifth stage until the morning. The 2002 world champion received 10 stitches to his right shin and four stitches to his left elbow.

Petacchi, the usurper to Cipo’s throne as cycling’s fastest man, easily beat Australian Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) to win his eighth career Giro stage. American Fred Rodriguez (Acqua & Sapone) came through fifth for his best finish so far in this year’s Giro.

The 30-year-old from La Spezia wasn’t aware of the drama in his wake.

“I didn’t know Cipollini had crashed. I saw him in the final kilometers but at the finish I was concentrating on the sprint,” Petacchi said. “I hope he’s okay, the Giro would lose a lot if he can’t carry on because it would be the end of our duel. I hope he can start tomorrow.”

Following the fireworks in Tuesday’s climbing stage, with Simoni imposing his authority with an authoritative win, there seemed to be a cease-fire in Wednesday’s stage from Porretta Terme to Civitella In Val Di Chiana. Rain at the start didn’t help either.

The pace was rather pedestrian over the Cat. 3 Passo della Collina at 16km and the Cat. 3 Poggio di Sugame at 113km. The peloton was bunched together coming up Sugame when Petacchi clipped wheels with another rider, causing the Fassa Bortolo sprinter to fall and splitting the bunch.

Petacchi suffered a scare when he landed hard on his lower back, but Fassa Bortolo led a quick chase to bring back their sprinter ace within 20km and Petacchi escaped serious injury.

“A lot of people were taking too many risk today but I was lucky,” Petacchi said. “When I went down earlier in the stage I thought my Giro was over because I hit my lower back. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt and got going again.”

The rain eased up over final half of the stage, with riders shedding their rain slicks and arm warmers. The improved weather put spirit back into the bunch, with several riders trying in vain to escape.

The day’s main move came when six riders — Nicola Loda (Tenax), Paolo Lanfranchi (Panaria), Giuseppe Muraglia (Formaggi), Alessandro Vanotti (De Nardi), Andoni Aranaga (Chocolade Jacques) and Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) – peeled away to open up a 55-second gap with 46km to go.

Fassa Bortolo put four riders on the front of the group to foil the move, with Saeco doing its bit as race leaders. Gabriele Colombo (Domina Vacanze) was bumping shoulders with Mauro Tosatto (Fassa Bortolo) with 2km to go as Cipo’s boys tried to push aside Petacchi’s silver train.

“We had to fight to get to the head of the field for the sprint but we managed it and I think it was a great sprint win,” Petacchi said. “My team was great yet again today.”

While Petacchi surged to another victory, Cipollini sat stunned on the ground, wondering what happened and what’s going to happen next. The once-untouchable Super Mario has been anything but that since he abandoned last year’s Giro after crashing out.

The 87th Giro continues Thursday with the 177km fifth stage from Civitella In Val Di Chiana to Spoleto. The relatively flat stage finishes with three passes on an 11km finishing circuit, a veritable sprinter’s paradise.

Everyone at the Giro is hoping Cipollini will be there to fight for the spoils. To see how today’s stage developed, just open up our LIVE UPDATE window and check back soon for full results, a race report from Andrew Hood and more photos from Graham Watson.
