Pacocha, Barnholt win Colorado ‘cross championships

VeloNews technical editor Matt Pacocha took a three-up sprint to win the Colorado state cyclocross championships Sunday in Boulder. Last year's champion Kerry Barnholt (Tokyo Joe's) defended her title, taking the women's open win over Lisa Matlock Strong (Tough Girl). With dry conditions, Pacocha took the hole shot and immediately opened a gap on the field. An elite group of five soon formed, containing Pacocha, Brandon Dwight (Boulder Cycle Sport), Jake Wells (Mafia Racing), Jonathan Baker (Vitamin Cottage) and Yannick Eckmann (Clif Bar).[nid:85762]

After Baker flatted and Eckmann faded, the podium selection was made, and only the order remained to be sorted out. Pacocha and Dwight launched a few attacks, but nothing stuck.

With a few laps to go, Dwight’s saddle cocked back on a remount and he was forced to stop and repair it. Noting the gap, Pacocha gassed it but could not keep Dwight at bay.

Coming into the final half lap, Dwight held a lead of a few bike lengths. But a fast, dirt downhill brought it all back together before the 180-degree turn 200 meters from the finish. Pacocha sat on Wells until about 100 meters to go, then launched his own sprint for the win.
