It was probably the shortest course you’ll ever see on the professional downhill circuit, but that didn’t stop the world’s hottest rider from adding another win to his resume. For the fourth time in four tries Australian Chris Kovarik was the fastest man down the hill, taking round No. 2 of the NORBA National Championship Series. Kovarik has now won both stops of the 2002 NCS and the opening two rounds of the World Cup series.

In the women’s race Frenchwoman Sabrina Jonnier posted the quickest time, giving the Intense team a pair of wins at Alpine Valley Resort in southern Wisconsin on Sunday. It was an identical result to the last year’s World Cup finals at Mont-Ste-Anne, where both riders also came away victorious.

On Sunday, Kovarik earned the right to go last after posting the morning’s top qualifying run on the half-mile course. Ahead of him it was it was fellow Aussie Jared Rando (Foes-Azonic) who laid down the first fast time of the afternoon, a 1:15.93. That mark held up against the next 35 riders, before Mongoose-Hyundai’s Eric Carter finally knocked Rando out of the hot seat with a 1:14.05.

Hannah just missed his second NORBA downhill win.

Carter would stay put in the leader’s chair for the next four riders, as New Zealander John Kirkcaldie (Maxxis) was the only rider to come close, missing the mark by just 0.005 seconds after crashing into the snow fencing just past the finish line.

Next through was No. 3 qualifier Cédric Gracia (Volvo-Cannondale). But an early-run bobble cost the Frenchman too much time, and he settled for 17th.

Now it was Mick Hannah’s turn, and the young Aussie was on his game. Hannah (Haro-Lee Dungarees) matched Kovarik’s mark from the morning, deposing Carter with a 1:12.53.

Finally came Kovarik, blasting his way down the short course. At the finish it was tight, but Kovarik found a half-second of speed on his second run, besting Hannah with a 1:12.07.

Carter held on for third, with Kirkcaldie fourth and Yeti-Pearl Izumi’s Nathan Rennie in fifth.

The women’s race wasn’t nearly as tight. After qualifying third in the morning, Jonnier shaved 5 seconds off her time, besting Britain’s Tracey Moseley (Kona) by 1.48 in the final. The day’s other top qualifier, Marla Streb (Luna), crashed at the bottom of the step drop that came just seconds into the course, and ended up 11th.

Lisa Sher (Chumba Wumba), Tara Llanes (Yeti-Pearl Izumi) and Vanessa Quin (Intense) completed the women’s podium.

The women’s competition was a bit thinned because of the absence of Missy Giove and Anne-Caroline Chausson. Giove is out with a knee injury, while Chausson was taking a week off. Chausson is slated to be back in action next weekend when the NORBA series continues with round No. 3 at Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia. Giove is likely out for another two weeks.
