Sacha Modolo (Bardiani Valvole-CSF Inox) won stage 2 of the Tour de San Luis on Tuesday, topping overnight leader Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Leigh Howard (Orica-GreenEdge) in Terrazas del Portezuelo, Argentina.

“I tried today,” said Cavendish. “I tried everything today. Modolo was just better.”

With the win, Modolo assumed the overall lead in the seven-day tour.

American Ben Jacques-Maynes (Jamis-Hagens Berman) spent the bulk of the stage in a long breakaway with Leandro Messineo (San Luis Somos Todos) and Martin Hacecky (ASC Dukla Praha), but the peloton overcame the trio inside five kilometers to go.

The Tour de San Luis continues Wednesday with the 173km third stage, which takes in two Cat. 1 climbs, including the ascent to the finish at Mirador del Potrero.
