FLORENCE, Italy (AFP) — Dutchman Mathieu Van der Poel won the junior men’s road race on Saturday at the UCI Road World Championships.
The son of former Dutch champion Adri Van der Poel, grandson of former French great Raymond Poulidor, and a two-time junior world cyclocross champion in his own right, Van der Poel emerged from the pack on the final climb of the Fiesole coast to join Franck Bonnamour of France, who had attacked in the penultimate round of the 140km race.
Van der Poel distanced his companion on the Via Salviati climb, 5 kilometers from the finish, to win by three seconds ahead of Mads Pedersen (Denmark), who out-kicked Albanian Iltjan Nika for second.
American Logan Owen just missed a podium finish, crossing fourth in the same time as Pederson and Nika.
