Alfa Lum’s Joane Somarriba, who finished in sixth, more than five minutes behind Ljungskog, retains her hold on the overall lead.

Ljungskog outsprinted her breakaway companion Russian Svetlana Boubnenkova to take the stage. The two escaped from a group of five that had successfully chased down a 93-kilometer solo breakaway effort by Germany’s Regina Schleicher. With just 25km to go to the finish, the five – Boubnenkova, Ljungskog, Natalya Kachalka, Lithuanian Zita Urbonaite and Russian Olga Slioussareva – reeled in Schleicher and then began a series of attacks that eventually saw Ljungskog and Boubnenkova escape and finish more than 2:30 ahead of third-placed Slioussareva and more than six minutes on the main field that included Italian Fabiana Luperini, Somarriba and Judith Arndt.

France’s Jeannie Longo, found herself in difficulty in the day’s final climb and finished at 8:04, slipping from fourth place on GC to seventh.
