Kump takes stage, Bérard leads Avenir

America’s Alex Howes was one of the main protagonists in Monday’s 189km third stage at the Tour de l’Avenir.

Howes snuck into the day’s main breakaway, which built up a menacing lead and put pressure on the French team to work hard to neutralize the dangerous escape.

Howes was caught with another surviving rider from the break with just 30km to go in the stage from Le Thuit-Signol to Compiègne — renowned as the annual starting point for Paris-Roubaix each spring — when Daniel Holloway and Kirk Carlsen counter-attacked with another rider to open a promising 35-second gap 12km from the line.

The French team was motivated to defend its top spots in the GC and did most of the effort to set up the mass sprint.

Slovenian Marko Kump was fastest across the line, out-kicking Germany’s Andreas Stauff with Belgian Kris Boeckmans third.

French rider Julién Bérard retained the overall leader’s jersey he snagged in a day-one breakaway.

The Avenir tour continues Tuesday with the 197km fourth stage from Margny-lès-Compiègne to Sedan in a hilly route with four rated climbs that should spring another breakout.
