Dani Moreno (Katusha) waited until just the right moment to uncork the winning move to claim victory in Saturday’s GP Miguel Indurain in northern Spain.
Early breakaways were neutralized coming into the final climb to the hilltop finale at the Basilica de El Puy above Estella at the end of the 179km race to open “Basque week.”
Mikel Landa (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Angel Madrazo (Movistar) rounded out the podium.
An early breakaway was neutralized with 40km to go thanks to work mostly from Euskaltel-Euskadi and Katusha.
Moreno was the “más listo” of a group of about a dozen riders to reach the bottom of the short, but steep climb. Dave Zabriskie (Garmin-Barracuda) led the pace coming into the bottom and finished a solid ninth in the one-day race.
Moreno, 30, surged late to snag his second win of the 2012 season, to go along with his stage victory at the Ruta del Sol last month.
Racing in northern Spain continues Monday with the opening of the six-day Vuelta al País Vasco.
