ANTWERP, Belgium (VN) — Katie Compton (Trek Cyclocross Collective) added the Scheldecross to her 2012 palmares on Saturday.
Sanne Cant (Veldritacademie Enertherm-BKCP), back to racing after a hard crash that took her out of the Roubaix World Cup round on Sunday, grabbed the early lead on the sandy course.
But Compton soon took over, leaving Cant to lead a chase with Telenet-Fidea teammates Amy Dombroski and Nikki Harris.
The pursuit held Compton to a five-second advantage for a while, but the relentless Compton added to it bit by bit, despite stumbling on a sandy U-turn descent that most of the women chose to run rather than ride.
In the end, Compton took what seemed to be an easy second consecutive victory here over Harris and Cant third.
American Amy Dombroski (Telenet) turned in a fine ride for fourth place on the day.
“‘Cross racing’s never easy,” she told Belgian TV afterward. “But yeah, today I felt a little better and I didn’t make so many silly mistakes.
“I always enjoy winning, and I like this race, so I’m happy.”
