AUGUSTA, Georgia (VN) — Julian Kyer (Juwi Solar Cycling) earned himself a stars-and-stripes jersey on Sunday in the elite men’s race at the USA Cycling road national championships.
Kyer edged Mathew Davis (Team LaS’port) by three seconds in the 168km race, winning in 4:02:29. Stefano Barberi (CashCall Mortgage) finished third at 11 seconds.
An early break swelled to 22 riders, taking three minutes on the bunch before sputtering. Then Kyer, Davis and Barberi attacked, gaining 30 seconds on a three-man chase with the field a further half-minute behind.
As the lead trio hit the final climb, “I just put it in a huge gear and I just stomped as hard as I could for the whole hill,” Kyer said. “I kept looking back down and I could see Mathew Davis’ wheel starting to come off a bit. I committed to it and punched all the way to the top of the hill and held on for dear life the rest of the way to the finish.”
