Ivan Santaromita (BMC Racing) won the Italian road championship on Saturday.

The course was a hilly 229km from Malé with an uphill finale at Fondo.

Santaromita had been part of a five-man break with Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida), Davide Rebellin (CCC-Polsat), Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale) and Simon Stortoni (Lampre-Merida). The quintet escaped the peloton on the last of four 30.5km circuits.

Attacks by Scarponi and Santaromita eventually whittled the group to three before Santaromita launched his decisive move with 500 meters to go on the twisty run-in to the finish.

In the finale the BMC rider took the flowers ahead of Scarponi and Rebellin.

“It’s been years that I’ve dreamed of this tricolor jersey,” Santaromita said. “Two hundred meters from the line I gave everything I had.”
