Horner and Jeanson fly at Redlands opener

In the last two years, however, the title of Redlands men’s champion has remained in the hands of two California natives: Chris Horner and Trent Klasna. And with day one of the 2002 edition in the books, it seems likely that one of these two SoCal powers will again walk away the first big win of the season.

Horner, wearing the new design of the suddenly powerful Prime Alliance team, put his name down as the man to beat by winning Wednesday’s opening stage, the 3.2-mile Mount Rubidoux time trial. Horner didn’t just skate by, he crushed. A look at the second-through-fifth-place finishes shows each rider separated by one second. Then there was Horner. He completed the twisty climb through Fairmont Park 14 seconds faster than Klasna, who finished second. He also destroyed Roland Green’s old course record by five seconds, and with a time of 8:48 was the only man to break nine minutes.

This, however, was nothing compared to women’s winner Genevieve Jeanson, who beat her own 2001 course record by a whopping 22 seconds. Saturn’s Judith Arndt finished a distant second to the Canadian Rona rider, 41 seconds back.

“I’m very surprised by that time,” Jeanson said with a shrug, claiming that she was unsure of her form after spending more than four months off the bike with tendonitis in her right leg in latter part of the 2001 season.

At the end of the day, the roles were in place. The upcoming stages of the men’s race look to be a battle between Horner’s Prime Alliance squad and Klasna’s Saturn team. Horner, who won in 2000, said that, unlike last year when he was with Mercury, he has been thinking about this race all winter.

“I have a different focus,” he said. “Last year I was with Mercury and we had lots of strong guys and Redlands wasn’t as important. But this year I didn’t go to Malaysia (Tour of Langkawi) and I wanted to come here with good form. You win the prologue and Redlands, and that means you have good form.”

Further displaying his trademark bravado, Horner said he feels good about his chances over the next four days and hinted at where the race’s key moment will come. “If the team can get me to the bottom of the climb on the Oak Glen stage, I think we’re going to win,” he predicted.

The answer to that will come on Friday, but don’t count out the defending champion Klasna, who pointed out his own track record on the Oak Glen stage. “I wouldn’t be so bold to say I’m going to win, but I’ve won that stage two times in a row,” he said.

Behind Horner and Klasna are a host of other teams and riders who are very much in it. Chris Baldwin put his Navigators team in the hunt with an impressive third-place finish, just one second behind Klasna’s time of 9:02. Fourth was Saturn’s Soren Petersen and fifth was mountain biker Roland Green, who also won the first stage last year and is riding for the Canadian National Team.

As for Jeanson, she’ll be hard to beat, but with Arndt, Lyne Bessette and Petra Rossner sitting second through fourth, Saturn is ready to fight.

“This race isn’t over,” said Bessette. “It just got started.”
