Team Sunweb won stage 1 of the Giro Rosa Friday by a slender margin over Mitchelton-Scott. Boels-Dolmans was third in the opening team time trial in Verbania, Italy.
Sunweb, winners of the 2017 world team time trial championships, rode the 15.5km test in 18:25, averaging over 50kph.
Mitchelton-Scott stopped the clock just one second slower. Boels-Dolmans, including 2016 Giro Rosa champion Megan Guarnier, ended the day 12 seconds behind.
Sunweb’s Ellen van Dijk took the first leader’s jersey in the 10-day race.
“That’s a bit of a double feeling because I’m super happy that we won this with the team, but it feels a little weird to get the jersey all alone while it’s a team effort. It’s just a great feeling to win this prologue as a team,” van Dijk said.
“We had a very good preparation. We reconned the course a couple of times. We had a good meeting beforehand. We had a very clear plan, and I think almost everything went according to plan, and that’s what you need here to win this race because you cannot make any mistakes.”
Saturday’s 120.4km stage around Ovado won’t present any major climbs, although with just a one-second lead, a sprinter like Mitchelton’s Jolien D’hoore might challenge van Dijk’s lead.
