Porte’s Giro start hangs in the balance — Sydney Morning Herald
Richie Porte says a recent stomach bug that saw him pull out of two WorldTour races has “complicated” his preparation for the upcoming Giro d’Italia.
Porte was forced to abandon Tirreno-Adriatico and Volta a Catalunya, two important preparation races for the Giro, at which Porte is slated to lead Team Sky in a bid for the pink jersey.
Speaking to Rupert Guinness from his home in Monaco, Porte said he would meet with Sky officials in the coming days to discuss his Giro plans.
“It has compromised my Giro preparation. I’m not sure. I will have to make a decision with David Brailsford and Tim Kerrison,” Porte told the Australian newspaper.
“One moment you are plotting on how to win the next day’s stage, then next thing you are up at 4am with gastro. It’s a little bit cruel,” Porte said. “There is still a long season to go … I have some time at home now to properly recover and get my season back on track.”
