The Giro d’Italia appears headed for Belfast in 2014.

L’Equipe reported Friday that the Italian grand tour would open in Northern Ireland just weeks before the Tour de France departs from Yorkshire, England.

A source close to Giro organizer RCS Sport, who asked not to be named, has confirmed the planned start to VeloNews. Organizers have not officially named Belfast the host of the 2014 Giro kickoff.

Giro director Michele Acquarone told VeloNews on Friday that he is concentrated on the race’s 2013 edition, which starts May 4 in Naples.

“We need to concentrate on the season that’s starting now,” he said. “We have a lot of irons in the fire. … 2014 is a long ways off.”
