RAPALLO, Italy (VN) – Giro d’Italia race director Angelo Zomegnan said “the race will go on,” after the death of Wouter Weylandt. How riders and teams will decide to act remains unknown.
“Tomorrow, the riders will interpret how they want to ride,” Zomegnan said. “Whatever choice they make, we will respect it.”
The Giro will take a somber tone for Tuesday’s fourth stage.
“Tomorrow we plan to pay homage,” Zomegnan said. “In the afternoon we will turn off the music and keep a low profile.”
Zomegnan and Giro doctor Giovanni Tredici were not forthcoming with further details of Weylandt’s death.
“Before we give any further details, we would like to meet with the widow and Wouter’s father,” Zomegnan said.
