LECCO, Italy (AFP) – RadioShack-Nissan rider Frank Schleck pulled out of Sunday’s 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia – the second tough mountain stage in a row, this one between Busto Arsizio and Lecco Piani dei Resinelli.

The elder of the Schleck brothers, and RadioShack’s team leader for this year’s Giro – a title he accepted only days before the start, after teammate Jakob Fuglsang pulled out – dismounted his bike less than one hour into the 169km stage.

He’s been suffering pain from injuries to his right shoulder after a fall on Wednesday.

The Luxembourger was in 15th place in the overall standings, 2min 20sec behind Canadian Ryder Hesejdal at the start of the day.
