Giro d’Italia: Who else?

Fassa Bortolo’s Alessandro Petacchi once again dominated a sprint finish at the Giro d’Italia to win the eighth stage of Italy’s national tour, a 210km race from Giffoni Valle Piana to Policoro. It was Petacchi's fourth victory of this year's race, which was still being led by 22-year-old Saeco team rider Damiano Cunego. Petacchi, who last year became the first rider in history to win at least three stages in the three major Tours of Italy, France and Spain in same year, proved simply too fast for Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen as he surged towards his tenth-ever Giro stage victory.

Fassa Bortolo’s Alessandro Petacchi once again dominated a sprint finish at the Giro d’Italia to win the eighth stage of Italy’s national tour, a 210km race from Giffoni Valle Piana to Policoro.

It was Petacchi’s fourth victory of this year’s race, which was still being led by 22-year-old Saeco team rider Damiano Cunego.

Petacchi, who last year became the first rider in history to win at least three stages in the three major Tours of Italy, France and Spain in same year, proved simply too fast for Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen as he surged towards his tenth-ever Giro stage victory.

McEwen, of the Lotto team, finished second ahead of Lithuanian Tomas Vaitkus who held off Germany’s Olaf Pollack to claim a place on the stage podium. But the Australian was later relegated to last place in the field (117th place)after officials ruled that he had been given a push from a teammate as he prepared to launch his final sprint. Vaitkus, therefore, was moved up to second with Gerolsteiner’s Olaf Pollack taking third.

As the race moved back on to flatter ground – following Saturday’s mountain-top finish – Cunego enjoyed his first full day in the race leader’s pink jersey.

Cunego, who won Saturday’s stage in magnificent style, was not affected when six-man break built a seven-minute lead on the peloton, before they were caught 20km from the finish line.

With his team boss Gilberto Simoni, the two-time champion, penciled in to claim a third consecutive Giro crown, Cunego knows it is only a matter of time before Simoni strives to take back the lead.

As a result, he is enjoying every second spent in the race leader’s pink jersey.

“I slept last night with the jersey next to my bed,” said Cunego, whose recent emergence in cycling’s elite has the cycling-mad Italian tifosi comparing him to the recently-deceased Marco Pantani. “I’m hoping to keep a hold of the jersey until the time trial (on Saturday). Some riders told me that Gilberto Simoni was a bit testy this morning. But I don’t think he will be angry with me. The final week will be all about him.”

Until then, the sprinters will have several occasions to show their stuff, and going on Petacchi’s form they will have plenty to worry about. With less than five kilometers to go in Sunday’s stage, Petacchi’s Fassa Bortolo team began to get edgy as the Acqua & Sapone and Alessio teams tried to muscle in.

But as the finish line approached Petacchi’s nerve held firm as a number of attacks came and went. In the final kilometer, McEwen dropped back before resurging to force his way past Pollack however the Australian could not get close to 30-year-old Petacchi.

Petacchi has now won four of the five stages which have been settled by mass sprints, with McEwen winning the only other last Thursday. A much hoped-for battle between Italy’s other great sprint stat, Mario Cipollini, never materialized as the older rider crashed last week and eventually withdrew from the Giro on Friday evening. McEwen has beene consistently strong throughout the Giro but, aside from his lone stage win, has found himself frustrated in efforts to beat Petacchi to the line.

Unfortunately for the Australian, a former winner of the Tour de France green jersey for the points competition, Petacchi said he is riding better now than he was a year ago. “I’ve already said that I feel better than I did last year,” said Petacchi. “My 15 stage wins from the three big tours last year gave me a lot of assurance of my ability.” Revised Results are postedTo see how today’s 214km stage unfolded, simply open up our LIVE UPDATE window.
