Gieten: Cant crushes the field for the three-peat

Sanne Cant claims her third straight Superprestige Gieten win in convincing fashion

Sanne Cant surged into the race lead in the first lap of Sunday’s Superprestige Gieten and never looked back. The 25-year-old Enertherm – BKCP rider from Belgium dominated the field on the varied lakeside course in the Netherlands, taking her third straight victory in the race.

Rabobank – Liv’s Lucinda Brand was Cant’s nearest competitor, crossing the finish line 26 down, though holding on to her own hefty advantage over the rest of the field. Sophie de Boer (Kalas – NNOF) rounded out the podium in third, a further 32 seconds back.

Cant, Brand, and de Boer flashed their strength in the first few minutes of the day, emerging from the first few corners in the lead, and they continued to shine as the three strongest riders in the race for the next 40 minutes. Cant was the class of the trio, however, opening up a gap of a few seconds before the end of lap one and never relinquishing control of the race after that.

De Boer and Brand chased Cant in tandem through a lap and a half before Brand went wobbly in a stretch of mud, giving de Boer a chance to pull ahead. But it wasn’t long before de Boer gave up the advantage, struggling in a sandy section and allowing Brand to charge past for good.

Brand was only a few seconds down on Cant at the second passing of the finish line, with de Boer not far behind, but that was the closest they would get to bringing back the defending champion for the race of the race. The gaps between the three riders would only grow over the ensuing five laps.

Brand went down in the sand towards the end of the fourth lap, which saw her chances of catching Cant grow even slimmer, though a flagging de Boer was unable to capitalize. With a quick remount, Brand limited her losses to her pursuing compatriot. Cant, however, was out of sight, and little changed for the rest of the race.

Cant took the bell at the start of the seventh and final lap with a 16-second lead, which she managed to extend considerably en route to the final crossing of the line. She took the win with none of her chasers in view on the finishing straight. Brand settled for runner-up honors, as de Boer held on for third.
