Gavere: Cant fends off determined rivals to take hard-earned victory

Sanne Cant nabs her third Superprestige win of the season at Gavere

Sanne Cant spent plenty of time in the lead at Superprestige Gavere Sunday, but she was forced to fend off a field of determined rivals at every turn until finally pulling out the win after five laps.

The 26-year-old Enertherm – BKCP rider claimed her third Superprestige victory in the fourth race of the series ahead of Telenet – Fidea’s Jolien Verschueren, who overcome a slow start to contest the win before ceding ground in the final lap. Boels – Dolmans’ Christine Majerus, who briefly led the race in the early goings, rounded out the podium in third.

With a number of uphills and several sections of deep mud, the Gavere course presented a serious technical challenge.

Majerus jumped out to an early lead in lap one with Cant, Ellen Van Loy (Telent – Fidea), Sophie De Boer (Kalas – NNOF), and Alice Maria Arzuffi (Lensworld – Zannata) in hot pursuit and Verschueren caught behind, gradually weaving her up through the field.

By the end of lap two, De Boer and Van Loy formed a lead trio with Majerus, as Arzuffi fell behind. Verschueren, meanwhile, was making short work closing the gap.

Before long, Cant put in a dig to open up a gap at the front, but her rivals kept her within striking distance over the ensuing two laps.

Verschueren continued to surge through the field, nearing the front of the race by the end of the third lap, where she found herself just ahead of Majerus with only Van Loy and Cant in front. She briefly lost her footing on a muddy climb, but quickly righted the ship, and rejoined Majerus. The duo then pulled even with Cant, as Van Loy began to fade, making for a new lead trio after four laps.

Then it was Majerus who began to fade, leaving the Belgian pair to duel one another on home turf for the Superprestige win.

A final-lap bike change would prove Verschueren’s undoing. After forty minutes spent clawing her way into contention following a rough start, she hit the deck in the pits while dismounting to hop onto a new bike. For Cant, just ahead and successfully aboard a new bike of her own, the fall provided more than enough of an advantage to seal the deal. Cant motored away solo and maintained an advantage of a few seconds through the fifth lap, with Verschueren falling further into the hole when forced to dismount early on her way up a treacherous muddy slope.

Cant rolled across the line six seconds clear to take the victory ahead of runner-up Verschueren, with Majerus a further 21 seconds behind. The win put more room between Cant and the rest of the field in the overall Superprestige rankings, with Van Loy — who finished fourth Sunday — currently the nearest challenger.

The Superprestige series continues December 3 at Francorchamps.
