Marga Fullana did it again, winning mountain biking’s 2002 World Cup openerin front of a raucous home crowd in Madrid´s Casa de Campo park onSunday. Some of Fullana´s biggest victories have come in her native Spain, including her World Cup win at El Escorial a few years ago and her secondworld title at Sierra Nevada in 2000.”The Spanish fans really helped me today late in the race. They reallyencouraged me to keep pushing,” Fullana said, winning in 2 hours, 31 seconds.Under bright sunny skies, Fullana attacked early, opened a 40-secondgap after the first of five laps and held the lead to the finish. Worldchampion Alison Dunlap nearly ruined the fiesta, however.Dunlap attacked hard off a chase group of six riders and whittled downthe lead from 1 minute, 20 seconds to just 25 seconds with a half-lap togo.”At first I attacked to open a gap on the chasers, but when I saw thatI was getting closer to Fullana, I went for it harder,” said Dunlap, secondat 36 seconds back. “I´m really happy with this result. One of mytop goals is the overall World Cup, so these points were important.”More important when you consider that Fullana won´t be racingin the Canadian World Cup events. Joining Dunlap in the chase group wereAlison Sydor, Gunn-Rita Dahle, Caroline Alexander, Sabine Spitz and Irina Kalentieva. Dahle and Kalentieva faded, but Spitz hung on to take thirdwhile Alexander and Sydor came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
