Oscar Freire (Rabobank) won Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol on Monday.
Freire out-sprinted Robert Wagner (Skil-Shimano) and Alex Rasmussen (Saxo Bank) to win the 182.2km stage from Otura to Córdoba. HTC-Columbia speedster Mark Cavendish was fourth in the same time. It was Freire’s second win in 15 days, having taken top honors in the second day of the Mallorcan Challenge.
Sergio Pardilla (Carmiooro) crossed with the bunch to retain his overall lead.
There was a massive pileup in the final mile that saw Damiano Cunego (Lampre) and Linus Gerdemann (Milram) hit the deck. Both were able to finish, however.
Tuesday’s Stage 3 is a 162.5km leg from Marbella to Benahavis.
