Donnelly wins Sun Tour opener with late attack

Youngster overcomes three years of struggle to win in the heat in Bendigo, Australia

Aaron Donnelly won stage 1 of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour Friday. Donnelly (NSW) topped Calvin Watson (Jayco-VIS) and New Zealander Josh Atkins (Grays Online NZ National Team) after the trio jumped away late in the 147km stage to Bendigo, Australia.

“It’s my first win in a long time. I’ve had a lot of misfortune the last couple of years, a lot of broken bones,” said Donnelly. “It wasn’t the best three years for me but I’m glad I’ve come out strong from it.”

Defending champion Nathan Haas (Jayco Australian Team) lost any chance of defending his overall title, losing 11:35 in brutally hot conditions that forced organizers to start the stage two hours earlier than planned.
