Dennis, Garfoot win Australian TT nationals

Rohan Dennis and Katrin Garfoot each claim their first-ever elite victories at Australian time trial national championships.

Rohan Dennis kicked off the new year with a convincing win at Australian national time trial championships Thursday, besting his new BMC teammate Richie Porte by 38 seconds over 40.9 kilometers. Sean Lake finished third, 1:34 behind, in Buninyong, Victoria.

In the women’s event Orica’s Katrin Garfoot won by a similarly impressive margin — 46 seconds over Shara Gillow and Tiffany Cromwell, who were second and third, respectively, in their 29.3km race. “There was a lot of pressure, more than the world championship it felt like, and I gave it my all,” Garfoot said. “I was really suffering out there, I was dizzy over the line so it’s not that I didn’t fight. I fought.”

Dennis’s victory was his first TT national title in the elite category and a healthy portion of revenge as well. Last year, the 25-year-old narrowly missed out on victory, finishing second, eight seconds behind Porte. Garfoot, 34, is also a first-time winner of Aussie TT championships. Her best result prior to 2016 was fourth place in 2014.
