COPENHAGEN (AFP) — Magnus Cort won stage 1 of the Tour of Denmark on Wednesday. Cort (Cult Energi) upset the sprinters when he won from the day’s breakaway in the 180-kilometer opening leg between Silkeborg and Varde.

Cort, 20, donned the overall leader’s jersey thanks to his sprint win over two compatriots, Lars Bak (Lotto-Belisol) and Nikola Aistrup (Concordia Forsikring Riwal), with whom he had escaped more than 150km from the finish.

The Tour of Denmark continues Thursday with the 180km second stage, from Ribe to Soendeborg.
