Carter Jones, Mara Abbott win Silver City Tour of the Gila

Abbott ran away with the race while Jones won a squeaker in the final Gila Monster stage

Carter Jones (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Mara Abbott (UnitedHealthcare) won the Silver City Tour of the Gila on Sunday.

Abbott and Daniel Jaramillo (Jamis-Hagens Berman) prevailed in the fifth and final stage, the Gila Monster Road Race.

Jaramillo took the 100.6-mile men’s race in 4:18:50, three seconds ahead of Rob Britton (Team SmartStop) and Will Routley (Optum), who finished second and third, respectively.

Abbott took the 68.9-mile women’s race in 3:16:19, nearly two minutes ahead of second-placed Flavia Oliveira (FSC-Zngine). Abagail Mickey (Twenty16) finished third at 2:27.

When the times were tallied, Jones — who finished seventh on Sunday — had vaulted into the final leader’s jersey with just two seconds to spare over runner-up Gregory Obando Brenes (Jamis). Britton rounded out the men’s podium in third at four seconds down.

Abbott’s race was not nearly so close. She claimed the women’s crown by 4:13 over Oliveira with Mickey third at 4:55.
