Just when everyone was ready to ordain Lance Armstrong as winner of Monday’s52km individual time trial, the Tour de France delivered another surprise.

In blustery conditions, Armstrong was out-motored by Colombian SantiagoBotero, the same racer who beat the Texan at the Dauphiné Libérétime trial in June.

The result stunned many, who expected Armstrong to blaze to yet anotherdominant victory. Instead, the U.S. Postal team leader finished second,11 seconds slower than Botero, and didn’t eat up enough time to grab themaillot jaune from Spanish rider Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano.

It was a double disappointment for the three-time Tour champion. Insteadof a stage win and the yellow jersey, he finished second on the stage andmoved into second overall, still 26 seconds behind Galdeano.

“At first I am disappointed because I didn’t win the stage and I didn’ttake the jersey. It was not a super day, but it was not a terrible day,it was average. The last five kilometers I was suffering,” Armstrong said.“When you come up against true specialists like Botero and Galdeano, youdon’t always win.”

While Armstrong remains the top favorite for overall victory, his seeminglyinvincible front might have a few chinks in it.

Armstrong second strongest
Armstrong has dominated the long time trials at the Tour since hiscomeback from cancer in 1999, winning all five long time trials he hasraced in during his three consecutive victories.

His losses in the race against the clock have come on shorter courses.David Millar won the 16km time trial that opened the 2000 Tour.Last year, Armstrong finished third in the 8.2km prologue to ChristopheMoreau by 4 seconds.

Armstrong said he never had the same winning sensations he experiencedin other big Tour time-trial victories.

“I would put it as a good ride,” Armstrong said. “The other ones I havewon in the past have been days when I’ve felt really, really good. Thosewere great days. It was just a steady effort. I never got to the feelingwhere I felt like I was really going fast. Today I never got to that point. In light of that, it’s not bad to be where I am.”

Armstrong’s only victory in the race against the clock this year camein last weekend’s opening prologue. Armstrong said the long, windy coursewas difficult.

“It was a long race. I had hoped to take enough time to take the jersey. It was harder than I expected,” he said. “I was going as hard as I could.I started fast and I suffered a little bit at the end.”

Botero started about one hour before Armstrong, and the Colombian wasflying all along the course. Sergei Gontchar (Fassa Bortolo) hadthe fastest time split at the first time check at 19.5km, but faded. Boteroheld the fastest mark through the second time check at 35km and into thefinish.

The real question was whether or not Armstrong could match Botero’sengine. Armstrong was six seconds off Botero’s time at 19.5km, but drewlevel with the Colombian at 35km. Armstrong struggled a little over thefinal part of the course where strong winds buffeted the riders.

The win for Botero was his second victory over Armstrong in a time trialin just over a month. Botero beat Armstrong at the Dauphine Libéréon June 12.

“I am very full of confidence,” Botero said. “I still think Armstrongis the No. 1 favorite. We will fight the Tour to the end. The Tour is nowmore spectacular. I don’t know if I can fight for the GC, but I will tryin the first climbs in the Pyrénées.”

Galdeano rode just fast enough to conserve his hold on the yellow jerseythat he captured when his ONCE team won the team time trial in stage four.Galdeano was one second faster than Armstrong at 19.5km, and was only sevenseconds slower than Armstrong at 34 km. He lost 14 seconds to Armstrongby the finish, but had enough of a gap to keep his hold on the jersey, the first time a Spanish rider has held the lead in the Tour since MiguelInduráin’s last victory in 1995.

“At the first part of the stage, I didn’t think about keeping the jersey,”Galdeano said. “I felt good as the course continued and I knew that I couldmake a good time trial.”

At the end of the day, Armstrong would have had the yellow jersey byone second had he not gotten tangled up in a spill going into the finishof Saturday’s stage, when he lost 27 seconds to Galdeano.

“Considering the time we lost the other day with the crash, maybethat might have changed things,” Armstrong said. “There’s a lot of responsibilitywith the jersey, so perhaps that’s a blessing that Galdeano still has it.We will ride like we always do in the mountains, will ride aggressive andattack. I can’t lie and say it’s not disappointing today. Otherwise, herewe go.”

Spanish riders minimize loses
For many Spanish riders, especially the rail-thin climbers, the wholepoint of Monday’s time trial was to get it over with. Kelme’s OscarSevilla has high hopes for the upcoming mountain stages and said hewent as hard as he could without going over the limit.

“I want to keep the time differences as small as possible,” said Sevilla, who finished 2:57 back and sits in 29th at 5:21. “We have a strong teamfor the mountains. Botero was very impressive today. Our team is in goodform. We haven’t had to work at all the first week. This is the terrainof the time-trial specialists. We are waiting for the mountains. We hopeto cause some pain for the American. We will be attacking hard.”

Vicente Belda, the team director of Kelme, said Armstrong is still thefavorite, but perhaps he’s not as strong as in the past.

“It’s always great to win a stage, but when you win against Armstrong, someone who has been omnipotent, it’s something special,” Belda said. “LanceArmstrong is human after all. He’s just like me, the other riders and thejournalists. He will have a bad day. Today wasn’t a bad day, but Induráinhad one, everyone has one. I don’t want to say that Armstrong is not thefavorite. He is, but we will fight.”

Galdeano said the ONCE team is now full of confidence. The team stillhas three riders in the top 10 overall and promises to fight hard to defendGaldeano’s jersey through two difficult climbing stages in the Pyrénéeson Thursday and Friday.

“Lance is still the grand favorite, but now at least for the race theTour is better,” Galdeano said. “We are making a war. The ONCEs are veryoptimistic because we have made a great first part of the Tour. But ifArmstrong is like he is in the past, he’s unbeatable in the mountains.”

There’s been some talk in the Spanish press about the Spanish teamsworking together to bring down Armstrong. The Texan said he wasn’t worriedabout the Spanish riders ganging up on him and his Postal team.

“If you follow cycling, you know that there’s no way that Kelme, ONCEand Banesto are going to work together. All they do is fight and argueall year long, so they won’t work together now,” Armstrong said. “We havesome Spanish riders on our team, too.”

Leipheimer slow off start
Rabobank’s Levi Leipheimer was hoping for bigger things than his 19thplace finish in 1:04:53, 2:35 slower than Botero. He’s now 22nd overall,4:39 back.

“It was long, a lot of wind. It felt like a head wind or crosswind theentire time. I started too slow and lost all my time at the beginning.Normally, any time trial is good for me. A time trial that’s not is long, flat, windy. I did my best and lost a lot time.”

Leipheimer said the wind was a factor as he came down the second halfof the course. As a huge mob of journalists crowded around him at the finishline, he admitted he started too slowly.

“My legs felt fine, not far from my best. It just didn’t go as wellas I planned. Normally I start slowly, that’s the type of time trialistI am. I lost all my time in the first 10 to 15 kilometers, but it was notenough,” he said. “I was hoping to open up in the end and go faster.”

Third overall last year at the Tour of Spain and fourth at the 2001world time trial championships, Leipheimer said his first Tour de Francehasn’t delivered too many surprises.

“It’s all about experience. It takes years to know that. I still havea lot to learn,” he said. “There really hasn’t been any surprises for me.The Tour has been very, very aggressive. For a lot of riders, the Tourends after the rest day. Riders have been taking every opportunity to geta stage win. It just takes a lot of concentration. It hasn’t taken toomuch out of my legs, so hopefully I will have my best form at the end.”

Leipheimer said all is not lost, at least for his hopes of finishingon the final podium.

“I’m not very disappointed. We’ve got to keep going. It’s just one day,”he said. “We have to see how good I am in the mountains. If I am feelingthat good, I will attack.

Tyler’s troubles
Tyler Hamilton has suffered his share of mechanical troublesthis season, and Monday’s time trial was more of the same for the CSC-Tiscalirider. If not for the flat tire he suffered, Hamilton might have foundhimself close to a podium spot in the overall at the end of the day. Instead,he finished 12th in the TT, 1:56 behind winner Botero, and is now ninthoverall in the race.

“I went a hundred percent,” said Hamilton, who was eighth-fastest through35km before he flatted with 12 kilometers to go. “I would have done a littlebetter had it not been for the flat. I lost a good 30 seconds or so.”

Hamilton's flat cost him time.

If Hamilton’s guess is correct — which it looks to be according to thetime splits — he would have finished the day eighth, and would have endedthe day sixth overall, just a few seconds behind Botero in general classification.

Hamilton wasn’t the only CSC rider to have a bad day. Crowd favoriteLaurent Jalabert also suffered a mechanical, and after a fumbledattempt at wheel change, his mechanic opted to give him a new bike. Helost at least 40 seconds in the muddled mechanical and finished a disappointing43rd, dropping to 18th overall.

Hamilton is now the highest-ranked CSC rider, but the American saidJalabert is still the captain of the team. “In my mind, Jalabert’s theleader of this team,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to help him out.”

Millar Time
British star David Millar (Cofidis) clawed his way into thetop-10 with an impressive seventh-place finish in the time trial. “I feltreally good,” Miller said after finishing 50 seconds off of Botero’s winningride. “I’m really happy with the time.”

Millar said the rolling hills and tricky winds throughout the 52km coursemade things tough. In this coastal region of Brittany, riders were forcedto negotiate everything from narrow climbs in the villages to exposed, wide open roads that ran alongside the scenic beaches.

“It’s a good course for time trial specialists,” he said. “It’s rollingand you have to pace it right, that’s all. It’s windy; there was a headwind on the way out, then a cross, and then tail wind.

Millar, who vaulted from 20th to seventh in general classification, said that he’s ready for the next phase of the Tour, after a tough openingweek that saw him involved with several crashes.

“I’m looking forward to the mountain stages,” he said. “It’s going tobe interesting. It’s going to be a big change from all these flat stages.I believe I’m not going to crash again, so that’s good enough for me.”

Botero’s bike
In addition to taking on the TT without an aero’ helmet, Botero wonthe time trial while riding his road bike. The Kelme-Costa Blanca rideris one of a very few riders who didn’t have a specific time trial machine. The Look KG 386 that Botero rode — the same one he’ll ride in the mountainstages — is a carbon frame that, according to a Look spokesperson, hasa weight of 1.750 kilograms for the frame and fork. Botero used a 55-toothchainring and rode with the nose of his saddle angled down further thanusual.
