MESAIEED, Qatar (AFP) — Tom Boonen boosted his prospects of a finding the overall podium in the Tour of Qatar by claiming Wednesday’s fourth stage.
The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider, who also took Monday’s second stage, moved up from fourth to second, 17 seconds adrift, behind teammate Niki Terpstra in the overall standings with two stages remaining.
Boonen was fastest in the sprint to close the 135-kilometer leg from Dukhan to Mesaeeid, beating André Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) and Barry Markus (Belkin).
This was the 33-year-old Boonen’s 22nd stage win in Qatar where he has taken the title in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012.
The Tour of Qatar continues Thursday with the 159km fifth stage, from Al Zubara Fort to Madinat Al Shamal.
