VALKENBURG, Netherlands (AFP) — Welsh rider Elinor Barker on Tuesday won gold in the women’s junior time trial the UCI Road World Championships here.

Barker, the silver medalist last year and 2012 European pursuit champion, finished 35 seconds quicker than the time of Denmark’s Cecilie Ludwig. Dutch rider Demi Di Jong was third in the 15.6km race, 1:03 slower than Barker.

The 18-year-old becomes the first British rider to win gold in this event since Olympic champion Nicole Cooke in 2001.
