Armstrong falls, holds lead in Dauphine

Lance Armstrong brushed off a rare crash early in Friday’s 192km fifth stage to retain the overall lead of the 55th Dauphiné Libéré race in another blistering hot day in France.

Armstrong crashed alone while coming off a descent just 14km after the start in Morzine and cut his right elbow and buttocks. Team officials said they weren’t sure what caused the crash, but the four-time Tour champion went down going an estimated 70 kph.

“He’s okay. You never know what can happen when you crash going that fast,” said team spokesman Jogi Mueller.

Armstrong finished the stage with rips on his cycling shorts and a bandage on his right arm. He later received two stitches at the team hotel, but did not go to the hospital and expects to start Saturday’s climbing stage.

U.S. Postal Service teammates waited for their captain as Armstrong quickly changed bikes and later held off attacks by Spanish rider Iban Mayo (Euskaltel) to finish eighth behind winner Laurent Lefevre (Jean Delatour) and preserve his hold on the leader’s jersey.

“We were lucky in an unlucky situation,” Mueller said. “He’s still in the race, nothing is broken and he can keep riding. It’s just another reminder how quick things can change.”

Armstrong was livid, however, when Jean Delatour’s Patrick Halgand twice attacked the bunch while Armstrong was trying to get back on. Otherwise, the Texan said he was fine.

“I knew I was OK when I got back on the bike and I felt alright,” Armstrong said. “I was a little nervous for about an hour afterward. Normally the bunch relaxes after a crash, but we were attacked by this guy Halgand. That’s unacceptable. You don’t do that in a race. I’m not too worried about the climbs tomorrow. Generally, I’m happy with how things are going.”

Halgand defended himself, telling AFP: “I thought Armstrong had had a puncture. I did not know he had fallen. That’s why I attacked, but then I was told to stop because Armstrong was on the ground. I agree you should not attack in these circumstances.”

Despite the melodrama, Armstrong’s Postal team kept a lid on things while a breakaway slipped away. In the break were Maryan Hary (Brioches), Andrea Peron (CSC), Lefevre (Jean Delatour), Denis Menchov (iBanesto.com), Pierrick Fedrigo (Credit Agricole), Andrei Kashechkin (Quick Step) and Nicolas Portal (Ag2r).

Peron faded on the final climb up the day’s major obstacle, the Category 2 Cote du Pas de la Fosse at 181km. Back in the main bunch, Mayo tried yet again to attack Armstrong, all for naught. Even with a cut-up arm, Armstrong held off the aggression. Mayo, Armstrong and David Millar (Cofidis), who opened up some time on iBanesto.com’s Francisco Mancebo going into Saturday’s climbing stage, rolled in just about a minute behind Lefevre.

American Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank) finished 13th at 1:38 back to remain seventh overall while Floyd Landis (USPS) did some good work for Armstrong throughout the stage. CSC’s Tyler Hamilton rode steadily and came across more than 11 minutes back.

The race continues Saturday with the 153km stage from Challes les Eaux to Briançon with difficult climbs over the Category 1 Col du Télégraphe and the beyond-category climb over the Col du Galibier.
