Anna van der Breggen takes Giro Rosa GC lead with stage 8 TT win

Anna van der Breggen powered to a time trial victory in the Giro Rosa's eighth stage, claiming the maglia rosa along the way

Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) laid down the power Saturday, scorching the stage eight time trial at the Giro Rosa. The win moved her into the maglia rosa with only one stage remaining.

The 21.7km individual time trial from Pisano to Nebbiuno was a difficult one. The technical course featured many curves and narrow roads, along with a short but tough climb to Brovello Carpugnino in the finale.

American Carmen Small (Bigla), whose team suffered stolen bikes yesterday, set an early fastest mark of 39 minutes and 26 seconds, but her time in the hot seat was short lived, as Clara Koppenberg (Bigla) came in with a time of 39:14. Katrin Garfoot (Orica-AIS) set a time of 37:22, knocking off nearly two-minutes from the previous best time. Her time in the hot seat would last until the final three riders, the GC top 3 at the start of the day, set out on course.

Van der Breggen, sitting third overall entering the stage, came in with a blazing time of 36:05, beating Garfoot by over a minute. Ashleigh Moolman (Bigla) could not match the speed of van der Breggen, but put in a respectable time to hold her top three placing overall, beating Garfoot by a single second.

Pink jersey wearer Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans) came into the stage with a 16-second advantage over van der Breggen, but as with the rest of the peloton, she could not match the Dutch rider’s speed, conceding 1:03. Van der Breggen now leads the general classification by 46 seconds over Guarnier, with Moolman rounding out the podium in third, 1:16 behind.

The final stage of the Giro Rosa will be no celebratory affair, as the race finishes at the ski resort in San Domenico di Varzo at 1,400 meters. The climb is a brutal one—at 10km in length and averaging just under 8 percent, it is one for the pure climbers.
