Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale) defended his title in the Classic Loire-Atlantique on Saturday.
The 16th edition of the 184.8km race consisted of 11 laps on a 16.8km circuit around Haye-Fouassière.
Gougeard, the winner here in 2014, made his move late in the final lap. With the peloton about a minute behind, he attacked twice, and the second surge stuck — he stayed away to take the victory ahead of former breakaway companions Marco Marcato (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché Environnement).
“It was a hard fight,” saud Gougeard. “I attacked for the first at 10km but I got caught. I tried again at 4km. I was confident. I knew that if I failed, Hugo Houle was able to win. When I feel as good as today, I ride aggressive. Attack is my trademark. I already finished six times in the top 10 this season but I was waiting for the victory.”
