USA Cycling has named the elite women, U23 men and Junior men who will represent the U.S. at the UCI cyclocross world Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic next month. The organization will announce the men's elite team on January 13.
One of the highlights of the U.S. cyclocross nationals in Bend, Oregon, last week was the Art+Bike Love evening: part performance, part gallery, part bike show. Robbie Stout took a look, and he brought along his video camera and a friend to hold it.
2009 U.S. Cyclocross Nationals Day 3 results
On Sunday, December 13th, Ryan Trebon (Kona-FSA) will defend his cyclocross national championship on his home turf in Bend, Oregon. Defending women’s champ and leader of the world cyclocross UCI points, Katie Compton, will having a go at her sixth national championship in a row.
The USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships are not a part of the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Racing Calendar, and last weekend’s four events were the final calendar races for the season. Jeremy Powers and Maureen Bruno-Roy are the overall winners of the 2009/2010 Cyclo-cross National Racing Calendar. The final standings are below.
The final round of the 2009 US Gran Prix of Cyclocross hits Oregon this weekend at the Stanley Portland Cup and the elite men and women’s fields will be competitive as ever. The competition returns to the Portland International Raceway on a course that includes sections of motocross track.
Johnson and Dombroski double up on Long Island
Eighteen inches or more of fresh snow has forced organizers to move this Sunday's Boulder Cup race from a grassy city park in South Boulder to the sandy Boulder Reservoir. The new venue will be familiar to many — it's the same as used last year for the Saturday race of the North American Cyclocross Trophy series weekend in Boulder. This year, the Saturday race is being held at the Xilinx venue in nearby Longmont.

The race had been planned as a link during the week between the USGP in Trenton New Jersey and the NACT Finals and MAC Races on Long Island the following weekend. The cancellation does not affect either the USGP, nor the NACT/MAC weekends.

Professional bike racing in the U.S. is different from just about every European country. When they say "pro" there, it means everyone in the race makes money doing it. Not so in the U.S. For some, becoming a professional means little more than cherry picking a few smaller races and paying USA Cycling $150 for an elite license. It was easy to see the differing ability levels at CrossVegas, as almost half of the field ended up lapped.
Heading into its sixth season, the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross kicks off Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin, with The Planet Bike Cup, a new event to the series. The timing of the addition makes it possible for riders such as Katie Compton and Jonathan Page, both sponsored by Planet Bike, to participate in the USGP — an opportunity both have had to forgo in the past due to their World Cup racing schedules.
Rabobank rider Bram de Groot is a good sport. The Belgian came to Las Vegas to race CrossVegas, though he hasn’t raced cyclocross in years. To open up his legs for the race, Giant’s Andrew Juskaitis took him for a mountain bike ride on Interbike’s Outdoor Demo Caldera loop — almost two hours of dry, loose trail embedded with rocks as sharp as razor blades. De Groot had never ridden a mountain bike in his life. It was 6 p.m. when he climbed on the big bike, with ace mountain bikers Adam Craig and Carl Decker for riding partners.
Giant Bicycles brought a prototype TCX Advanced SL carbon bike to Interbike for Adam Craig to race in Wednesday night’s CrossVegas event, and VeloNews took an exclusive first look mere hours after team manager Frank Trotter finished building it.
After a challenging summer fraught with sponsorship problems, Katie Compton has her program back on the rails, just in time for cyclocross season. For starters, she signed with Planet Bike as her primary sponsor. Then, a few weeks before opening weekend, a choice blend of product sponsorships fell into place, including Stevens Carbon Team frames; Zipp wheels, bars, and cranks; and SRAM Red drivetrain parts. Planet Bike gave the duo freedom to forage for supplementary sponsors, and they came up golden. “It’s a dream sponsorship for us,” said husband Mark Legg-Compton.
Rabobank ProTour team member Bram de Groot will compete at this week's CrossVegas cyclocross race in Las Vegas, the event organizers announced. The race organizers say the Dutch rider’s appearance will mark the first ever by a Rabobank rider in a U.S cyclocross event. de Groot also will attend the Interbike Outdoor Demo on Tuesday to visit with Giant bicycle dealers. Giant sponsors Rabobank. The 35-year-old de Groot has been a member of the Rabobank team since turning pro in 1999.

National level cyclocross begins this weekend with the Full Speed Ahead Star Crossed on Saturday, and the Rad Racing Gran Prix on Sunday. This is also the first of five weekends of the North American Cyclocross Trophy (NACT). Star Crossed is under the lights of the Marymoor velodrome in Seattle, Washington. Racers will put their early-season cyclocross ability to the test. Star Crossed is known for its boisterous atmosphere, thanks to the 360-degree viewing, beer garden, deep prize list and DJs.

This weekend’s Rad Racing GP and FSA Star Crossed kick off the North American Cyclocross Trophy series
The North American Cyclocross Trophy (NACT) series was created as a way to bring some of the best cyclocross races into the spotlight. After a successful inaugural season in 2008, the series is back with an additional weekend of races. In 2008, the eight-race series was decided at the final venue in Southampton, New York. Ryan Trebon took a close win over Jeremy Powers for the men and Georgia Gould bested Amy Dombroski for the women’s overall title.
