2018 Buyer’s Guide

All the bikes we’ve chosen to include in this Buyer’s Guide, as well as the accessories and gear, are excellent. We know because we tested them, beat on them, analyzed them, pondered them. Now we want to share what we’ve discovered with you.

It should come as no surprise that many of today’s best bikes aren’t the top-dollar halo bikes. (Some of them are, though.) And sometimes the bike that seems like an incredible deal just isn’t that good. (Sometimes it is, though.) We try to quantify that reality with our value score, which is based on all the other criteria measured against a bike’s cost in dollars.

In other words, we try to give you all the perspectives you need to spend your money wisely.

7Mesh MK2 bib short

The 7Mesh MK2 bibs are snug around the waist but relaxed in the thigh, which is good if you’re not exactly racer-lean.

Ashmei Bib Short V.3

Ashmei's Bib Short V.3 has earned a permanent place in our closets with exceptional fit, high compression, and comfortable straps.

Shimano S-Phyre Jersey

Shimano's made-in-Japan jersey ditches shoulder seams to eliminate bunching, thereby reducing drag.

Pactimo Summit Aero RT Jersey

Pactimo Summit Aero RT makes orange look cool, and the hi-vis jersey is cut for racers.

Donkey Label Team Cross Jersey

Donkey Label Team Cross Jersey looks good and it’s comfortable with polyester fabric that's soft to the touch.

POC Avip Short Sleeve Jersey

Poc tends to make aesthetically polarizing gear, but the AVIP jersey hits the nail on the head.

Ashmei Croix de Fer

The Ashmei Croix de Fer's fit is snug but forgiving; it’s ideal for gran fondos and all-day warm-weather rides.

Rapha Pro Team Arenberg

Rapha's Arenberg sunglasses are Italian-made full-frame shades that offer tons of coverage and a detachable Zeiss lens.

Koo Open Cube

Building off its debut Open sunglasses, Koo’s Open Cube offers the same pivoting earpieces and Zeiss lens, but in a half-rim style.

100% Speedtrap

The 100% Speedtraps sport a big, angular, almost-robotic look that’s found a home on Peter Sagan’s face.
