The German speeds to another victory in the desert and now leads the GC by 8 seconds.

Marcel Kittel is the king of the Dubai Tour thus far, with the German speedster winning stage 2 — his second victory at the race — Wednesday in Ras al Khaimah.

Kittel and his Quick-Step Floors teammates celebrated at the end of the 188-kilometer stage, which ended in a crowded sprint that saw several riders in play for a victory.

In the final stretch, two Quick-Step riders peeled away and let Kittel’s massive engine take over as the front group approached the finish line. Kittel was pedaling hard on the left side of the road while his chief rivals for the stage win Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL – Jumbo), Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina), John Degenkolb (Trek – Segafredo), and Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) were over to his right and dealing with a bit of a traffic jam as they mashed on their pedals.

Kittel, who won Tuesday’s opening stage, now has seven career stage wins at the Dubai Tour. Groenewegen took second in Wednesday’s sprint and Mareczko was third.

“Today was a difficult one. The final was different and tricky, and as a result there wasn’t an opportunity to stretch out the peloton, but adapting to different race situations shows the strength of the team,” Kittel said. “The guys did, once again, an incredible job, Fabio [Sabatini] brought me to the front when it mattered, Matteo [Trentin] kept the speed high, and I jumped from wheel to wheel and managed to take the victory.”

Kittel leads Groenewegen by 8 seconds in the general classification, while Nicola Boem (Bardiani – CSF) is 13 seconds adrift in third.

“To have seven stage victories here is nice,” Kittel said. “As I said at the beginning of the week, Dubai has always been good to me. The race is not over, and our goal is to keep on working and take it day by day as good as possible. We’ll see how things pan out.”

The Dubai Tour picks up with Thursday’s stage 3, which measures 200km from Dubai to Al Aqah.
