Gavere: Van der Poel dominates to nab fourth straight Superprestige win

Mathieu van der Poels nabs a fourth straight victory in the Superprestige series ahead of Wout Van Aert and Toon Aerts

Mathieu van der Poel’s Superprestige dominance showed no signs of letting up Sunday at Gavere. A week after securing his third straight Superprestige win in Ruddervoorde, the Beobank – Corendon rider cruised to his fourth victory in the series so far this season.

Wout Van Aert (Crelan – Vastgoedservice), meanwhile, kept streak of his own alive in pursuit of his Dutch rival, securing a fourth straight Superprestige runner-up result behind the series leader. Toon Aerts (Telenet – Fidea) rounded out the podium in third.

Van der Poel took control of the race early, pulling away after a little over a lap, with Van Aert and Tom Meeusen (Telenet – Fidea) trying to limit the damage and Aerts a bit further back. Van der Poel had to dismount briefly to fix a chain problem, but he’d already built enough of an advantage over the pursuers that the short interruption hardly made a difference.

After four laps, his lead over Meeusen and Van Aert stood at around half a minute, and his advantage continued to grow from there on out.

As Van Aert began to put some daylight between himself and Meeusen in the fifth lap, Aerts and Kevin Pauwels (Marlux – Napoleon Games) pulled closer to the front of the race. No one came close to reeling in van der Poel however, who was stretching the gap out to nearly a minute with three laps to go.

Aerts had left Pauwels and Meeusen behind by the final lap, by which point the gaps at the head of affairs were so large as to leave little question about who would claim the first and second steps on the podium. Van der Poel cruised through the final few corners comfortably before hitting the finishing straight to savor the no-doubt victory, his fourth of the four Superprestige races thus far this season.

Reigning world champion Van Aert secured his familiar second place 1:02 behind. Aerts crossed the line 18 seconds later to break Laurens Sweeck’s stranglehold on Superprestige third-place finishes after the 22-year-old ERA – Circus rider had nabbed the final spot on the podium in the first three races of the series. Sweeck came home fourth in Gavere.

With his dominant performance Sunday, Van der Poel further extends his narrow lead over Van Aert in the Superprestige series, which continues December 3 at Francorchamps.
