The 2016 Paris-Roubaix peloton was spared the rainy weather that had been predicted earlier in the week, but there was no shortage of carnage on the cobblestones. Aside from Matthew Hayman’s surprise victory, surely the most memorable moment of the Hell of the North this year was Sagan’s outrageous evasive maneuver on the Mons-en-Pévèle sector, monster-trucking over Fabian Cancellara’s bike and somehow riding away unscathed — with only one foot clipped in:
Team Sky was in the catbird seat as the race entered the final 60 kilometers, with four riders in the group of favorites, but then disaster struck as Gianni Moscon and Luke Rowe crashed:
And then it happened again, this time with Sky’s Salvatore Puccio. (We’ve been looking for that highlight video but haven’t found it yet.)
Though its nice to have Ian Stannard on the podium, surely the British super-team, still seeking an elusive monument victory, will look back on Sunday with a bit of regret.
